sharp tv aquos quattronWe recently sent our East Coast reviewer out to look at the new Sharp TV Aquos Quattron range and the report he put in on the new 60 Inch “835″ Quattron was encouraging, even if Sharp are still a bit awkward and leaning towards being “geek friendly” on the usability front. So, you can imagine my delight when we were back in the U.K visiting Alison’s brother only to find out he’d got himself a new Sharp TV Aquos Quattron LC46LE835U – excellent. I’d been hankering after checking out the color on the Aquos Quattron for a while, so here was my chance!

Sharp TV Quattron Review

Now the first thing to say is that Ian is a geek, plain and simple. Now retired he spent his working life building complex computer programs so he just loves playing with TV menus and working them out. When he comes to stay our TV settings are a constantly changing thing – much to my annoyance!

So, Ian delighted in giving me a guided tour of the set up and menu systems on his new Sharp TV. He dug deep into the color settings and demonstrated with pure delight how he could change the settings to suit his viewing needs (which are somewhat left-field to say the least…German Steam Train channels and Spanish Euro Pop).

Sharp TV – Slightly Awkward Menus

I have said before that Sharp do make things perhaps a little more awkward than they need to be on menus and set up and Ian’s demo did nothing to dispell that view. The menu systems were quite complex and a little cumbersome. I guess Sharp are just a little stuck in the past and probably no worse than my first LG Plasma in all honesty.

However, when compared to the new intuitive and graphical menus on something like the new LG Smart Cinema TV sets, they are not wonderfully user friendly. But that is just a gripe…if you do go for a Sharp TV Aquos Quattron you’ll just need to be prepared to get to grips with this apsect. The user manual does explain fully, you just need to allocate time to fully understand how it all works. So why would you but a Sharp AquosQuattron?

Sharp LED TV – Great Technology

Certainly from a technological point of view, Sharp have some of the best “tech” around and that makes for great pictures. The reason I was so keen to see the Quattron for myself is that Sharp have introduced a fourth color into the screen color make up…hence the name Quattron.

Now a Fourth Color on the Sharp Quattron

Most HD TV sets just use three colors to build all the colors needed in a screen picture, but Sharp have added yellow to the mix and the result is quite amazing. Certainly any yellows (that are now native on the Sharp Quattron) are brilliant. I really was taken aback by just how bright the yellows were. Ian made sure he had plenty of examples of brilliant yellow recorded…like a big yellow steam train!!!

Stunning Colors

But more than that, the HD image was also exceptional. We watched horse racing from Doncaster (no, you don’t want to go there). It was a sprint so the acton was fast and frenetic, with many horses (of similar color) racing close together at high speed. I would have expected some blur amongst the gaggle of racing legs, but everything remained crisp, true and very well defined.

It was a bright day so the image shone out of the TV with stunning clarity and beautiful contrast. Sharp TV sets do not employ the local dimming technique some manufacturers use, but the contrast was just as good. Now I think the reason for that has to be the fourth color in the spectrum, the yellow. Sharp say they use something called their “Ultrabrilliant LED system” which uses a “double-dome” lighting to make the picture so brilliant. I don’t know what it is, but it is an outstanding picture. The clarity, detail and color was very impressive indeed.

More Sharp Aquos Technology

Certainly the 240Hz refresh rate helped and Sharp also employ “Aquomotion” to help the image remain stable and reduce blur. They also say this helps reduce crosstalk (or 3D image blur), but Ian hadn’t yet got his 3D glasses so we couldn’t check that out. The set does need active shutter glasses by the way.

Integral Wi-Fi and A Good Selection of Apps on the Sharp Aquos Quattron

Another plus is built in wi-fi and a host of Internet apps and content including “Cinema Now” for films and HD content online.

So, I am glad Ian got himself a new Sharp TV – Aquos Quattron LC46LE835U, I really enjoyed his demo and would definitely now endorse what Sharp are doing in 3D LED TV. I also enjoyed the watch and guided tour. I probably wouldn’t have seriously considered a Sharrp Aquos Quattron before seeing one in action, now I think I would. One thing though…the biggest they do in the U.K is a 46 inch – LOL!
