Toshiba 55YL863B Review

Toshiba 55YL863B Review The Toshiba 55YL863B is a high-end TV from Toshiba that comes with the company’s powerful CEVO picture processing engine, active 3D support and built-in Smart TV features, so let’s get on with this Toshiba 55YL863B Review. By the way this is a U.K set and review. The chassis has also been styled by Jacob Jensen’s studio, the people behind many of Bang Olufsen’s iconic 1990s product designs. The asking price is quite high at £1,500, but as a sweetener, Toshiba is currently running a promotion: if you buy this TV before Christmas from participating retailers, you’ll get a free Blu-ray player and one year’s subscription to the LoveFilm movie rental service.   User interface and EPG This model takes the same twin-circle approach to its menu system as the 55WL863 that we looked at recently. You select an option, such as set-up, from the semi-circle at the bottom of the screen and this then shunts you to an upper circle where you choose other entries like picture, sound and preferences. Due to its use of darker colours, the presentation looks a touch dull, especially next to the bright and cheerful menus found on LG and Samsung’s latest models. The navigation is also fussy — especially as there’s a jarring switch between this circular system and the flat menus that you eventually end up in. On the plus side, you do soon get used to it and it’s arguably faster to use than Sony’s Xross Media Bar system. Unfortunately, Toshiba has carried the dark and dingy colour schemes across to the Freeview electronic programme guide (EPG). The EPG...

In pictures: Toshiba VL9 passive 3D TV series

Toshiba TV – 3D LED TV VL9 Series Toshiba has announced the update to its VL series of passive 3D TVs, unveiling its new VL9 TVs at its Partner Summit 2012 conference. The VL9 series is at the top of its Smart 3D LED TV line-up and offers polarised 3D viewing to consumers – and comes without the company’s Regza branding, which has been dropped in the UK. As this is the top of the range TV it’s interesting that Toshiba has opted to add passive 3D to the range, but it told TechRadar that it wasn’t just about the 3D but the bigger processor inside the TV and the fact it offers 200Hz screen technology.   Alongside the 3D capabilities, Toshiba has added its 2D to 3D conversion, which comes complete with depth control.   There’s also Freeview HD on board and Toshiba’s smart TV functionality. This includes access to the main Toshiba hubs – like Places – and hosts apps such as YouTube, Flickr, Facebook, iPlayer and Acetrax.   The VL9 series also comes with WiDi technology, which is Intel’s proprietary wireless technology. If you have a compatible laptop then you can throw media from this PC to the TV in an instant.   The Toshiba VL9 range comes in 42-, 47- and 55-inch sizes and there will be four polarised 3D glasses in the box with the television.   Additional specs include USB HDD recording, edge LED backlight technology and Toshiba’s MediaGuide internet EPG.   The TV can also be controlled from a smartphone app, which is available for both Android and iOS.   The Toshiba...

Toshiba 7200 “bezel-less” 3D LED TV

Toshiba 3D LED TV With No Bezel Toshiba has revealed that it considers its latest release, the new Toshiba 7200 (as well as 6200) Smart 3D TV as the best one let it be in terms of software, design or image quality. Its new “bezel-less” look that the firm has provided it with has successfully pushed it to a new level. It seems, its bezel less or extremely thin bezels that is the latest ‘in’ thing for TV sets with more companies set to join the craze sooner than later. If the bezel free models made one to think that the presence of the bezel does not matter much, one has to actually view the new Toshiba (as well as the new bezel less set from LG) 3D TV to see what the future will be like. The set can give 240Hz which is not that appreciable but any anything above 120Hz is quite acceptable. Something that we really need to make a note of is that the television set is equipped with Passive 3D technology. As a result the glasses to be used would be available at a much cheaper rate (less than $15). But as far as quality is concerned folks still would prefer active 3D over passive 3D. The only problem is that the glasses which come compatible with the set are more expensive. DNLA Compliant Being a DLNA the smart TV can stream from countless home media servers and other devices that it connects to. An appreciable number of features termed as “Smart” such as media guides, web browsing apart from “classic” smart TV apps...

The last Panasonic I watched as particularly bad with Crosstalk at the top of the screen. I didn’t realize I hadn’t noticed crosstalk on this Toshiba TV until after I have finished watching!
