What’s The Difference Between LCD and LED TV
There are so many different styles of TV on the market now that it’s hard to tell what you should actually buy to make sure you get the right TV for you and your house. We can address the difference between LCD and LED TVs and which one will work better for you in another article, but for now we are just going to discuss what makes them different on a fundamental level.
LED stands for “light emitting diode”, which you may have some experience with in other areas. LED lights are common place in a lot of different areas of life, from the lights we string up at Christmas time to the flashlights that we keep in our trucks in case of emergencies. LED TVs use backlight to create the luminescent colors that we have come to expect from high quality TVs. Red, Green and Blue LED Lights combine their colors to produce an amazing range of other colors.
The True Difference Between LCD and LED TV
LCD screens are common place in the computer field and have been gaining large amounts of use in the world of handheld devices. LCD stands for “liquid crystal display”. There is a thin layer of liquid crystals in the screen that change their shape based on the electric current that is applied to them. This allows them to produce the pixels and colors that you need for high quality images to come through.
Some LCD screens use LED lights for backlight, but the LED lights don’t actually produce the colors and the images. They only aid in the visibility of the screen.
There is another generation of displays that have been hitting the market lately, which are known as retinal display screens. They started being used in handheld devices, like the I-Pad 3, but are seeing some use in TVs. Those are on the edge of mass market application and are still quite expensive, but they have resolution that is unmatched at this point.

The Difference Between LCD and LED TV
Mitsubishi Firing Lasers Into LED TVs!!
Well okay not quite that dramatic, but it got you reading didn’t it?
This was the news story we found on www.ledtv.org……
“Mitsubishi was showing off their “Laser Backlight LCD TV” at a Tokyo press conference where all the big names were showing off their wares. Mitsubishi, in particular, showed off a 46-inch LaserVue prototype that utilized only a red laser and a cyan LED that was integrated into the backlighting technology to project the images. That is opposed to their other displays that utilize three lasers for each primary color (red, green, and blue).
This single-laser system, according to Mitsubishi, has an emission wavelength of 638nm that can boost the on-screen quality of certain colors. The color Mitsubishi was most concerned about was the color red. This television produces the richest colors of red you can find in any LCD-based television anywhere. It can also produce powerful green and blue colors as well that can cover the spectrum. It also achieves a 126 percent color gamut.”
Will this be the next revolution in led tv technology, well we think in its current state no, why? well look at this this way we have just been given the 3D LED TV and that’s blown most of us away (well some tv’s not others) and the old backlit, edge lit, blah blah….. so this may indeed be just another “gimmick” and are we gonna fall for it..?
Nah…..
Not yet!
